La Broye–La Gruyère Route: Payerne-Bulle

Properties of the itinerarie

Distance: 47 km

Ascent/Descent: +852m / -533m

Altitude min./max.: 447m / 886m

Scenic crests, babbling streams and shady woodland sweeten the ups and downs on this country route. In the distance medieval Romon stands proud on a hill and Bulle beckons with culinary delights.

The route leaves the Broye plain with jet planes and enters the tiny valley of the Arbogne, before a sudden steep climb, passing the700-year-old round keep (tower house) of Montagny-les-Monts. The rolling hills in the Fribourg district of Glâne are marked by farming, the up and down effort sweetened by tiny streams, crests with scenic views and shady patches of woodland.

The picturesque silhouette of Romont appears on a hill in the distance, the tower and several battlement walls providing evidence of the town’s ability to defend itself in medieval times. Things get really colourful in the castle: old and new stained-glass windows compete for attention in the Swiss Museum of Stained Glass. The tiny convent of La Fille Dieu is worth a visit, perhaps to hear a celebratory psalm chanted by the nuns.

On over wide crests and tiny valleys where dairy farming and agriculture alternate, the Gibloux vantage tower beckons in the east. Railway tracks and tiny trains wind along with the route to Bulle, the main town in the Gruyere region and a centre of culinary specialities including Gruyere cheese, double cream, cuchaule (saffron bread) and Bénichon mustard.
